AI interstellar mission Alpha Centauri is no longer science‑fiction. The nonprofit Fermi Explorer Mission announced today a plan to launch a solar‑powered probe by the close of 2029, aiming for the nearest star system.

AI interstellar mission Alpha Centauri: The trajectory breakthrough

Using an AI system called Get Physics Done, developed by the Physical Superintelligence lab, researchers identified a previously unexplored solar‑sling trajectory that brings the craft within a fraction of Mercury’s orbit, harvesting four‑times solar intensity for brief thrust bursts. The approach keeps the vehicle under 1 kg of payload while staying under a $15 million budget.

“We’re dead set on something actually launching,” says Philip Johnston, co‑founder of the mission.

The AI ran for three days, processing 58 million tokens to generate the plan. It suggested the engine fire only near perihelion, allowing tiny solar panels to remain lightweight. The projected travel time is roughly ↓ 80,000 years, comparable to Voyager 1’s pace but representing a concrete step toward interstellar capability.

Funding of ↑ 58 million dollars comes from Breakthrough Energy, founded by Bill Gates, alongside private donors. For context, Reuters reported that Breakthrough Starshot’s laser‑propelled probes remain unlaunched after a decade of effort.

The mission also carries a modern “Golden Record” – a curated mix of art, science, and a message to any civilization that might encounter the craft. Beyond engineering, the launch seeks to test the Fermi paradox: if intelligent life is common, why haven’t we seen evidence? By sending a human‑made beacon, the project forces a new data point in that debate. AP News has covered similar interstellar initiatives.
