How Climate Change Is Reviving Yellow Fever Across the Globe

Yellow fever, once largely confined to tropical zones, is reappearing in areas that have gone decades without a case, driven by warming temperatures and erratic weather patterns. Scientists warn that rising heat accelerates mosquito metabolism, shortens the virus’s incubation period, and pushes infected primates toward urban fringes. Recent outbreaks in Brazil’s megacities and the Colombian Andes illustrate the trend.

“Yellow fever is a highly deadly disease; any environmental pressure that raises outbreak likelihood is deeply concerning,” Dr. Joelle Ivy Rosser told Live Science.

A 2023 Reuters analysis predicts that under the most extreme climate scenario, ↑ 1 billion people could be newly exposed to Aedes aegypti mosquitoes within a century. The United States, already home to the vector in Florida, Mississippi, Arizona and New Mexico, may see the species expand northward to cities like Philadelphia and New York, echoing historic 19th‑century outbreaks. Local transmission would require infected travelers to seed the mosquito population, a scenario experts deem “in the realm of possibility.”

Deforestation, Urban Edge and Mosquito Dynamics

When drought forces forest‑dwelling monkeys and mosquitoes toward human settlements, bite rates rise as dehydrated insects seek blood meals. Conversely, heavy rains create breeding pools, amplifying vector numbers. The convergence of these extremes at the urban‑forest interface heightens spillover risk, a pattern also observed with malaria and dengue.WHO initiatives focus on vaccinating at‑risk populations and preserving forest buffers to limit contact.

“Human agricultural expansion brings people into the habitats of yellow‑fever‑carrying mosquitoes,” says WHO biologist Gabriel Parra‑Henao.

While wealthier North American cities boast robust water infrastructure and rapid vaccine deployment, vigilance remains essential. Ongoing surveillance, targeted immunization campaigns, and climate‑adapted vector control could prevent a full‑scale resurgence.
