Roman Space Telescope launch set for Aug. 30

The countdown is on for NASA’s Roman Space Telescope, slated to lift off at 7:27 a.m. EDT on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy from Kennedy Space Center. After a final daylight exposure, the observatory was sealed in its payload fairing last week and now heads to the sun‑Earth Lagrange Point 2, a stable orbit roughly 1.5 million km from Earth.

This mission caps a ↑ $4 billion, two‑decade development effort that promises 50‑times wider infrared imaging than the James Webb Space Telescope and new probes into dark energy, dark matter, and exoplanets.

Budget turmoil under the Trump administration

In April 2025 a leaked FY‑26 budget suggested a ↓ 50% slash to NASA’s science portfolio, sparking fears the Roman telescope would be axed just weeks from completion. Engineers at Goddard described a climate of uncertainty, with staff reductions and “deferred resignation” offers.

“We’re 95 % there. If it gets canceled, it would be ridiculous,” one senior engineer told Space.com.

Project manager Jamie Dunn later testified before the National Academies, noting that similar cuts had haunted the program for years, yet the team kept “coloring” and delivering on milestones.

Congressional rescue and accelerated schedule

Congress rejected the steep cuts, restoring FY‑26 funding to near‑FY‑25 levels. To avoid another fiscal cliff, mission leaders pulled the launch window forward, moving it from September to late August, forcing two‑shift work and weekend labor.

The effort paid off: NASA announced in April that the telescope was completed eight months ahead of schedule and under budget.

Now the only variable left is the launch vehicle. “I’m really nervous because it’s out of our hands,” the same engineer said, as the Falcon Heavy ignites.

Following liftoff, Roman will perform a mid‑course correction about 24 hours later and then coast for roughly 30 days to L2, where it will begin its scientific campaign.
