Trump Netanyahu White House meeting: timeline and stakes

President Donald Trump told Axios on Saturday that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has asked for a White House audience, potentially as early as next week after Trump returns from the NATO summit. The remark “knows who the boss is” was made in a brief phone call, underscoring a personal rapport that has frayed since their February Situation Room encounter.

“We get along very good. He knows who the boss is,” Trump said.

Israeli officials caution that a meeting next week is unlikely because Trump will attend the NATO gathering in Turkey on July 7‑8; a ↓ 5% chance, they estimate, that the visit will occur before the summit ends. An Reuters report noted that the next feasible window could be the following week.

Netanyahu’s office released a statement saying the call was to congratulate the United States on its 250th Independence Day and to reaffirm Israel’s view of America as a guarantor of global liberty. The two leaders reportedly agreed to meet soon in Washington.

Inside the Trump camp, skepticism toward Netanyahu has risen. A senior U.S. aide told AP News that many advisers believe the Israeli premier misread the regional calculus. Last month Trump labeled Netanyahu “crazy” after a flare‑up in Lebanon, accusing him of ingratitude.

Despite the friction, Trump signed a memorandum last month extending a cease‑fire with Iran and reviving nuclear negotiations, a move that could improve regional stability by ↑ 3%. He also urged the Israeli defense forces to temper operations in Lebanon, arguing that continued fighting hampers the diplomatic track.

For Netanyahu, a White House audience could provide a boost ahead of Israel’s October election, where polls show him trailing. The convergence of personal ambition, shifting alliances, and the broader Iran‑Israel confrontation makes the upcoming encounter a flashpoint for both domestic and foreign policy.
