Florida primary erupts into a ‘Florida Man’ free‑for‑all

The Tuesday primary in the Sunshine State reads like a meme come to life, with carpetbaggers, homophobic flyers and a scandal‑riddled congressman vying for attention. Florida primary observers note that the GOP stronghold is wrestling with a surge of bizarre candidacies while Trump’s approval has slipped ↓5 points in recent polls.

Governor’s race: Byron Donalds on the brink

Rep. Byron Donalds cruises toward a historic GOP nomination, poised to become Florida’s first Black governor. His main rival, James Fishback, is tangled in a Reuters-covered $1.3 million attorney‑fee judgment.

“It’s like Florida Man is having his own election right now,” a Republican consultant said.

U.S. Senate showdown

Democratic hopeful Alex Vindman trails state Rep. Angie Nixon by a razor‑thin ↓10 points in a poll released by a Democratic‑leaning group to AP News. Nixon’s recent affiliation with the Democratic Socialists of America fuels GOP alarm.

House battles across the peninsula

In the redrawn 25th District, pro‑Israel incumbent Jared Moskowitz squares off against socialist Oliver Larkin; the Jewish‑heavy constituency tilts the odds toward Moskowitz.

The 20th District, long a Black‑majority seat, features a crowded Democratic field. Rap icon Luther Campbell slams Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz for parachuting into the district after a GOP‑led map flip.

In the 6th District, Rep. Randy Fine faces off against former “manosphere” influencer Dan Bilzerian, who posted an AI‑generated video calling Fine a “fat Jew” and invoking Hitler. Fine is the favorite.

The 24th District’s Democratic primary is marred by a false text blast falsely attributing an HIV claim to Sen. Shevrin Jones, a gay Black lawmaker.

Rep. Cory Mills, embroiled in a restraining‑order scandal, may lose the 7th District GOP primary to former TV reporter Ryan Elijah after Trump and DeSantis withheld endorsements.

Southwest Florida’s 19th District has attracted five “carpetbagger” hopefuls, including former House member Catalina Lauf, who recently earned a Trump endorsement.

With registered Republicans outnumbering Democrats by ↑1.5 million, the GOP still holds a structural edge, even as voter fatigue grows.
