Temporary Protected Status faces mass terminations under Trump

The Trump administration’s latest push to terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) puts more than ↓ 1,000,000 legal residents at risk as expiration dates loom for thousands of others. Families who have built lives for a decade or more now confront uncertainty, from construction crews in the Southwest to home‑care aides in the Northeast.

“TPS is more than a piece of paper; it is the gateway to a stable future,”

says Lucia Gomez, national immigration coordinator for LIUNA. A June Supreme Court ruling that cleared the way to end protections for Syrian and Haitian holders has emboldened the administration, and a federal judge lifted a stay on Ethiopian terminations on Tuesday.

Economic ripple effects of a shrinking TPS pool

Data from FWD.us and the National TPS Alliance show that ↓ 152,000 Salvadoran TPS holders are employed in construction, logistics and other essential sectors. Employers warn that losing this labor pool could cripple home‑care services, nursing homes and building projects. Reuters reports that the Department of Homeland Security has not clarified whether designations for El Salvador (170,000) and Ukraine (101,000) will be automatically extended, leaving the fate of those communities in limbo. “It is a moral question for the United States,” asserts Jose Palma of the National TPS Alliance, noting that many TPS families have U.S. citizen children and have contributed to the economy for over two decades. The White House counters that TPS has become “a de facto amnesty program” and that restoring its original temporary purpose will protect American workers, a claim challenged by labor leaders who call for legislative relief.
