Disney sues FCC over alleged censorship campaign

In a bold move, Disney, ABC and eight owned stations filed a complaint in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, demanding a temporary restraining order to halt FCC Chairman Brendan Carr’s push to deny broadcast‑license renewals.

Impact of Disney sues FCC litigation

The suit alleges the Federal Communications Commission violated the First Amendment by retaliating against protected speech, asserting that “Again and again, the Administration has attacked ABC’s speech—the stories its journalists report and the viewpoints its network programs air,” the filing reads.

“Over time, those attacks have escalated into express demands that ABC be stripped of its broadcast licenses because of its speech.”

Legal analysts note the case could set a precedent for how regulatory bodies interact with media giants, especially after Reuters reported similar tensions in prior FCC actions.

Disney’s counsel argues the move is essential to protect journalistic independence, while critics warn it may politicize the licensing process, threatening ↓ 1 broadcast‑license renewal for the network.
