The clock is ticking: in exactly 30 days the total solar eclipse 2026 will darken skies over Greenland, Iceland and northern Spain, offering a fleeting two‑minute window of totality for anyone positioned within the narrow corridor.

How to Catch the total solar eclipse 2026

Travel planners should lock in accommodations now, as hotels in Spain’s coastal towns are already filling up. The eclipse reaches its peak over the Snæfellsjökull National Park in Iceland at 5:45 p.m. GMT, delivering ↑ 2 min 10 sec of darkness. In Spain, the sun sets low; observers in Gijón will experience totality at 8:26 p.m. CEST with the solar disk covered ↑ 99.96%.

Prime Viewing Spots

Scoresby Sund, Greenland – 1 min 46 sec at 4:35 p.m. CGST, 24° above the western horizon.
Reykjavik, Iceland – 1 min 1 sec at 5:48 p.m. GMT, 25°.
A Coruña, Spain – 1 min 15 sec at 8:27 p.m. CEST, 12°.

“The 2026 eclipse is Europe’s first total solar event since 1999, and its weather prospects make Spain a hotspot,” notes an astronomer at NASA.

Even outside the path, a dramatic partial eclipse will sweep across most of Europe; London will see 91% obscuration, Paris 92%, and Madrid nearly 100% (Reuters). Safety glasses are non‑negotiable.

Our correspondents will be on the ground: Daisy Dobrijevic joins an expedition to Greenland, while Anthony Wood reports from northern Spain. Follow our live blog for minute‑by‑minute updates.
