James Webb Space Telescope Finds Hidden Dwarf Stars, Tripling Early Galaxy Mass Estimates

Using the unprecedented sensitivity of the James Webb Space Telescope, astronomers have uncovered a hidden population of low‑mass stars in galaxies that formed less than 1.5 billion years after the Big Bang. The discovery reshapes estimates of early‑galaxy mass and hints that the infant universe was richer in stellar material than previously thought.

James Webb Space Telescope reveals abundant faint stars

Researchers examined nine primordial galaxies, pairing JWST infrared spectra with ground‑based data from the Very Large Telescope. By isolating the subtle spectral fingerprints of dwarf stars, they measured a stellar mass distribution skewed toward low‑mass objects, a pattern starkly different from that of the Milky Way.

“The galaxy’s total mass may be up to ↑ 4× higher than earlier estimates,” says lead author Mariska Kriek of Leiden University.

The findings challenge the long‑standing assumption that the initial mass function has remained constant throughout cosmic history. If early galaxies routinely hosted such prolific dwarf‑star populations, calculations of star‑formation rates, chemical enrichment, and even planet formation in the first billion years must be revised.

Future JWST campaigns aim to extend this technique to even earlier systems, potentially reaching the era of the universe’s first luminous objects. For more context on how JWST is redefining cosmology, see Reuters and the NASA archives.
