A new Altrata report confirms that the global count of billionaires has surged to a record 3,795, and their collective wealth has climbed ↑ $15.1 trillion, roughly a quarter of the S&P 500 market cap.

billionaires favor sports stakes and charitable giving

The study shows a ↑ 12.8% increase in total fortunes year‑over‑year, driven largely by AI‑related investments. Twenty‑nine individuals now sit above the $50 billion threshold, joining the likes of Larry Page, Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos.

“Sport has long been the most popular interest of the global billionaire class,” the report notes.

Ownership of professional teams offers both prestige and a foothold in rapidly expanding media‑rights revenues, according to Reuters. Bezos recently secured a near‑40% stake in Liverpool FC, while Steve Ballmer bought the LA Clippers and Robert Kraft controls the New England Patriots. Beyond trophies, philanthropy remains a core outlet: Bezos’ Earth Fund, Ballmer’s $8 billion education pledge, and Kraft’s $1 billion health‑care initiatives illustrate the scale.
