How the next-generation atomic clock could redefine timekeeping

Researchers at the University of Colorado and the University of Bonn have revived a dormant 1990s laser scheme, proposing a next-generation atomic clock that locks a cloud of atoms to a single, ultra‑stable light field. In this model the atoms no longer tick in isolation; they march in step, amplifying the signal and squeezing the laser’s linewidth toward the theoretical limit.

“The collective behavior could push optical clocks into a regime previously thought unattainable,” said Jarrod Reilly, lead author.

Theoretical calculations published in Physical Review Letters suggest the approach may achieve a ↑ 10‑fold reduction in frequency uncertainty compared with today’s best optical clocks. Such precision would sharpen GPS, improve tests of fundamental physics, and aid deep‑space navigation.

Critics point out that scaling the technique from simulation to a laboratory apparatus may introduce ↓ 5‑% efficiencies in photon collection. Ongoing collaborations with Reuters-covered labs aim to validate the concept experimentally by 2028.
