Enterprises Prioritize Speed Over AI Compute Cost, Yet 69% of GPUs Idle

Enterprises are racing to buy AI compute for speed, yet more than half cannot accurately measure AI compute cost. A recent Reuters-backed survey of 170 firms with over 100 employees shows ↑ 66% have AI workloads in production and ↑ 29% claim to run them at scale.

Why AI compute cost remains invisible

Performance and GPU availability now outrank total cost of ownership when buying decisions are made. Reliability tops success metrics for ↓ 69% of GPU operators reporting utilization at or below 50%.

“We care about latency, not the bill,” said a CIO of a major tech firm.

Only 47% of respondents rigorously track AI compute cost, and among the subset running AI at scale the figure climbs to just 56%. Satisfaction scores reflect the gap: overall satisfaction 4.14 vs. value‑for‑money 3.87 on a five‑point scale.

Where the next dollar is headed

Specialized AI clouds are on the radar of ↑ 44% of firms, even though current usage sits under 4%. Non‑Nvidia accelerators attract interest from 39%, while on‑premise expansion lags behind.

The memory bottleneck in large‑scale inference is barely addressed: Dell and Nvidia claim a combined 45% of responses, leaving 19% of firms without a clear strategy.

As enterprises double‑down on speed, the lack of transparent AI compute cost could become a strategic liability unless measurement tools catch up.
