Apophis 2029 flyby: International Mission Overview

As the Apophis 2029 flyby approaches, a coalition of NASA, ESA, Roscosmos and JAXA is orchestrating a coordinated swarm of probes to study the near‑Earth asteroid during its closest pass in April 2029.

Scientists aim to map the asteroid’s composition, measure its Yarkovsky drift and test autonomous navigation algorithms that could one day protect Earth from impact threats.

“This is the most ambitious multi‑agency effort to rendezvous with a potentially hazardous object,” said a senior engineer at Reuters.

Funding for the venture has risen ↑ 12% since its inception, reflecting growing confidence in the technology suite.

Risk assessments, however, indicate a ↓ 3% probability of mission delay due to launch window constraints.

Details are being updated on the agencies’ portals, with live telemetry expected to stream to the public once the swarm reaches the asteroid’s vicinity.
