Space Debris Removal: From Game Theory to ESA’s ClearSpace‑1

While titles like Hardspace: Shipbreaker let players slice derelict hulls with lasers, the real task of space debris removal is a surgical operation conducted at 7‑8 km/s.

Christian Steimle, project manager for ESA’s ClearSpace‑1, explains that the mission’s goal is to capture the 600‑kg PROBA‑1 satellite without generating new fragments. “The common agreement … objects to be removed shall not be broken up or damaged,” he told Reuters.

“We will enclose the client, then de‑orbit both together,” Steimle said.

The spacecraft will launch into a slightly lower orbit, perform a series of fly‑by inspections, then deploy a cage that ↑600 kg of hardware will gently close around the target. Once secured, the pair will lower their perigee, ensuring a controlled re‑entry that burns up over the ocean.

Games get the physics of inertia right; a missed velocity vector can doom a mission. Real ADR vehicles must match tumbling rates, a challenge echoed in the gameplay of ΔV: Rings of Saturn. Yet the industry tolerates zero margin for error—any stray fragment travelling at ↓7–8 km/s becomes a kinetic hazard.

Current economics differ sharply from the profit‑driven loops in simulators. The priority is to preserve the orbital commons for future users, a principle echoed after the pandemic-induced supply chain shocks that reminded policymakers of fragile systems.

Looking ahead, private firms in Europe, the United States and Japan are testing nets, harpoons and robotic arms. Low‑Earth‑orbit missions will favour agile servicers; geostationary tasks will rely on larger platforms that shift debris to a graveyard orbit, a nuance rarely modelled in games.
