Iran Conflict Cripples Asia Farmers, Endangers Global Food Supply

Rising costs of fuel and fertilizer are forcing Asia farmers in Thailand, Vietnam and beyond to abandon a planting cycle, a fallout of the Iran‑Israel war that has snarled supply chains.

Asia farmers face unprecedented financial pressure

Fuel prices have surged ↓ 15% since the conflict erupted, while fertilizer tariffs jumped ↓ 30% according to Reuters. With margins squeezed, many smallholders anticipate a sharp decline in output, threatening the global food supply chain.

“If planting is delayed, the ripple effect will be felt on world markets,” warned an analyst at Bloomberg.

The reduction in acreage could shave hundreds of thousands of tonnes from rice and wheat totals, tightening prices for consumers worldwide.
