For anyone who grew up with the 1980s He‑Man craze, the Masters of the Universe 1987 release still feels like a cautionary tale of misplaced ambition.

What the 1987 Masters of the Universe film got wrong

The Cannon Group, fresh from a string of low‑budget action flicks, tried to turn a beloved toy line into a blockbuster. Director Gary Goddard was forced to shrink the budget, swapping planned Icelandic vistas for a rushed Vasquez Rocks shoot.

“We were literally pulling the plug at midnight,” Goddard recalled in a recent documentary.

Star power was uneven. Dolph Lundgren, fresh from Rocky IV, was cast as He‑Man but looked more like a metal‑band frontman than the cartoon’s muscle‑bound hero. Meanwhile, Frank Langella’s Skeletor was a brooding villain far removed from the cackling foe fans remembered.

The script stripped away fan favorites – Orko vanished, Prince Adam never appeared, and the iconic Sword of Power became a mere prop. Instead of an epic battle on Eternia, the climax unfolded on a bland Oklahoma set, reducing the scope to a ↓ $17.3 million domestic gross that placed the movie 65th in the 1987 box‑office rankings.

Financial woes at Cannon were already spiraling; the studio had just sold off a large portion of its library to stay afloat, a move reported by Reuters. The flop accelerated the decline, leading to the eventual shutdown of Cannon Pictures in the early ’90s.

Even the 2026 reboot, bolstered by CGI and a massive budget, had to cherry‑pick characters, leaving many nostalgic fans wondering why the original was so barren. The lesson echoes across the industry, especially after the recent pandemic disruptions that forced studios to re‑evaluate franchise risk.
