July inflation trends amid volatile energy prices

Consumer prices rose ↑ 3.4% year‑over‑year in July, a slight retreat from 3.5% in June, the Labor Department reported Wednesday. The monthly increase was a modest 0.1%, suggesting that the surge in oil and gas triggered by the Iran conflict is not yet permeating the broader price base.

Core CPI, which strips out food and energy, slipped to 2.5% from 2.6% a month earlier, matching the post‑pandemic low recorded in early 2024.

Energy and fuel pressures persist

Nationwide gasoline averaged ↓ $4.04 per gallon, up 16 cents on the month, according to AAA. While gasoline prices fell 2.9% from June, the upward tick in August could reignite headline inflation.

“You’ve got all these things that are just not the way the economy used to behave,” KPMG chief economist Diane Swonk said.
