Chipflation Accelerates: Why Memory Prices Won’t Cool Soon

Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows the Producer Price Index for electronic components surged ↑ 27.6% in June YoY, the steepest rise since records began in 1966.

Why chipflation won’t abate soon

The term chipflation captures the relentless climb in memory‑chip costs driven by AI‑model training and inference workloads. Smartphone makers and PC assemblers now compete with hyperscalers that have locked in supply through multi‑year contracts, squeezing the remaining inventory. A recent Reuters report notes Apple is evaluating Chinese memory supplier CXMT to curb expenses, a move that would require a White House waiver.

“Memory chips are invisible until your device slows, your bill spikes, or your margin erodes,” said Shawn Kim of Morgan Stanley.

The price of a gigabyte of DRAM has multiplied ↑ 6× over the past twelve months, reversing a half‑century trend of decadal price declines. Analysts now speak of “FOMP” – fear of missing procurement – as firms rush to secure chips rather than cut spending. The upcoming CPI release will reveal how much consumer electronics are feeding headline inflation, though economists expect only a modest 0.1‑point lift to the overall index.
