The early‑morning raid that hit Abu al‑Duhur airbase sparked a diplomatic flashpoint.

Israel strike on Syria: Washington’s growing unease

According to U.S. and Israeli officials, the operation was meant to stop a Turkish weapons shipment and a broader buildup near the Turkish border. Eight bombs struck the freshly rebuilt runway, a fact later confirmed by U.S. envoy Tom Barrack on X, who called the move an “unnecessary escalation.” There were no casualties, but the damage to the runway – ↓ 8 bombs – sent a warning signal. The strike occurred ↓ 45 miles from the Turkish frontier, prompting Ankara to denounce Israel’s “fabricated pretext.”

“There is no Turkish presence at the base,” a Turkish official told reporters.

Washington, already juggling a fragile truce with Damascus, expressed “deep concern” and warned that further unilateral actions could jeopardise the tentative security accord the Syrian government has been courting for weeks. The Trump administration, eager to showcase a diplomatic win in Syria, has hinted it will press Damascus for restraint after Israel’s upcoming elections. Reuters noted that the U.S. had been pressed by Syrian officials to activate a joint coordination centre in Jordan, a proposal Israel has so far ignored. The episode underscores how the Israel strike on Syria is testing the limits of the U.S‑Israel‑Turkey triangle at a time when the region is still coping with the after‑effects of the pandemic.
