The United States’ decision to bar travelers from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda and South Sudan has ignited a firestorm among public‑health experts.

Ebola travel ban

Africa CDC warns the restriction could drive patients underground, feeding transmission chains already spiralling in South Kivu, where ↓ 1 new case was confirmed this week.

“Lockdowns without support only deepen mistrust,” said Dr. John Nkengasong, head of the agency, in a

statement

that echoed earlier warnings from the World Health Organization.

Critics argue the move sidesteps the root causes—fragile surveillance systems, under‑funded labs and cross‑border trade that fuels mobility.

Instead of a blanket ban, they urge targeted screening, vaccine deployment and community engagement, strategies proven to curb outbreaks without stoking panic.

As the Reuters report notes, the epidemic has already strained regional health budgets, threatening progress on other diseases, including the lingering pandemic of COVID‑19.

Economists fear the travel curtailment could also dent tourism revenue, a ↓ 5% dip projected for the next quarter, compounding humanitarian costs.
