Is a Gen Z Religious Revival Gaining Momentum in America?

The notion of a Gen Z religious revival is swirling through sermons, TikTok feeds, and conference halls.

Gen Z Religious Revival: Voices from the Pulpit

Pastors from Phoenix to New York point to packed pews; Bishop John Dolan reported ↑ 300 baptisms over Easter, most under 30. TikTok creator Anthony Gross filmed a night Mass at St. Joseph’s in Greenwich Village that left him “blown away” as seats vanished ten minutes before the service.

“Everyone was under 30,” Gross said.

Youth‑focused events like the Catholic Youth Conference in Houston drew ↑ 2,000 participants, and the upcoming Long Beach gathering promises similar numbers.

Survey Data Paints a Different Picture

Yet a December Pew Research Center report finds “no clear evidence” of a nationwide surge, and the Public Religion Research Institute notes that only 54% of adults 18‑29 identify as Christian versus 75% of those 65+. Ryan Burge, a former pastor turned scholar, warns that isolated anecdotes “stick in our minds” while overall religiosity has merely plateaued since 2020. Media outlets often chase stories that flip the script, says Melissa Deckman of PRRI, adding that occasional local upticks don’t translate into a national trend. Gallup’s April poll did register a modest rise in young men rating religion as “very important,” but weekly attendance figures remain flat. Some analysts, like David Campbell of Notre Dame, argue the current chatter could be a leading indicator that will surface in future surveys. Others contend the surge is mythic, noting that churches have long attracted niche youth groups without a cohesive narrative. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix’s listening sessions reveal that many young people seek “belonging, safety, and healing” after the pandemic, a sentiment echoed by youth political analyst Rachel Janfaza. Whether the momentum sustains or fades, the debate underscores a broader search for community in an age dominated by social media and AI. Reuters
