Zimbabwe boat accident death toll climbs to 68

The overloaded ferry capsized on Tuesday amid strong winds, trapping passengers on the water. Among the dead were eighteen children, a tragic loss that has sparked calls for stricter safety checks on commercial vessels.

“We are mourning a national tragedy,” a local official told Reuters.

Authorities are probing the incident, focusing on whether the vessel exceeded its passenger limit and the role of sudden gusts. AP News reported that similar accidents have plagued the region’s waterways, highlighting systemic oversight gaps.
