Multinational security force set to replace failed Haiti mission

The United States is mobilizing a multinational security force to confront Haiti’s spiraling gang warfare, after a ↓ $970 million operation left the island in deeper crisis.

Unlike its predecessor, the new contingent will wield expanded rules of engagement, allowing rapid interdiction of armed groups across Port-au-Prince and the surrounding regions.

“We cannot afford another dead‑end effort,” a senior State Department official told Reuters.

Funding, however, remains a looming obstacle; the Pentagon forecasts a ↓ 30% cut in discretionary support compared with the last budget cycle.

Why the shift matters

Analysts argue that broader authority could deter the most violent cartels, yet critics warn that without sustained financing the force may repeat past mistakes.

Regional leaders, including the Caribbean Community, have pledged logistical assistance, while the United Nations urges a coordinated civil‑security plan.

All eyes now turn to whether this revamped initiative can break the cycle of violence or simply add another costly chapter to Haiti’s turbulent recent history.
