Zimbabwe presidential term extension clears Senate

The upper chamber voted 75 in favour and ↓ 4 against a package that lengthens presidential mandates from five to seven years, paving the way for Emmerson Mnangagwa to remain in power until 2030. Pro‑government spokespeople argue the change injects stability after years of economic turbulence, citing the need for continuity as the nation recovers from the pandemic.

Opposition brands move a constitutional coup

“We are witnessing a subversion of the 2013 charter,” said a leading opposition figure, adding that the amendment erodes the very checks that limit executive authority.

Critics point to the timing: the amendment was fast‑tracked ahead of the next election cycle, raising doubts about the fairness of the process. Reuters noted that similar extensions have historically sparked unrest in the region.

International observers remain wary, warning that the broadened term could embolden Mnangagwa’s inner circle and further marginalise dissenting voices. The Senate’s approval marks a decisive step toward reshaping Zimbabwe’s political horizon.
