The Wall Street Journal’s new investigation flags a series of procedural blunders by the Pima County Sheriff’s Department during the ongoing hunt for missing woman Nancy Guthrie.

Key Errors Attributed to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department

According to court files and interviews with former federal agents, investigators failed to secure the initial crime scene, omitted critical DNA sampling, and delayed deployment of aerial assets for over ↓ 5 months after the disappearance in February.

One former deputy, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters, “We were told to prioritize other cases, leaving Guthrie’s trail to grow cold.”

“The lack of coordination undermines public confidence,” a spokesperson for the Arizona Department of Public Safety warned.

Legal analysts note that these lapses could expose the department to civil liability, especially as families compare the mishandling to other high‑profile cases documented during the pandemic era.

City officials have pledged an independent review, and AP News reports that the sheriff’s office has already begun re‑training its search teams.
