Cash found on Sicilian beach sparks police raid

Tourists strolling along Scopello were startled when a waterproof sack burst open, spilling bundles of €5 and €10 notes onto the sand. The total value, ↑ 700,000 euros, prompted immediate lockdown of the site.

“We have never seen anything like this in our jurisdiction,” said a local magistrate, speaking to Reuters.

Investigators traced the money to a clandestine shipment that likely capsized off the coast of Palermo. Three suspects were linked to the haul; two are now in custody while the third remains at large ↓ 1. Italian authorities have seized the cash and opened a formal inquiry into possible money‑laundering connections.

Legal experts warn that the incident could expose weaknesses in maritime cargo monitoring, a point echoed by a recent Bloomberg analysis of illicit cash flows in the Mediterranean.

As the probe unfolds, the beach will be cordoned off for forensic examination, and locals hope the scandal will not deter the summer influx of visitors.
