Resident Evil ending subverts expectations

Zach Cregger’s new Resident Evil ending delivers a bleak, nihilistic punch that catches even the most die‑hard fans off guard. Austin Abrams stars as courier Bryan Hodukavich, a reluctant hero thrust into a snow‑bound nightmare after a routine delivery turns lethal. The film opens with Bryan racing toward Raccoon City General Hospital, unaware that the organ case he carries contains the final component for a cure. A collision with a zombie‑infected woman triggers a cascade of grotesque mutations, forcing Bryan to battle an ever‑evolving mass of limbs and tentacles. Scarcity of ammo and relentless hordes amplify the tension, echoing the series’ signature survival horror roots while forging a fresh narrative path. By the time Bryan reaches the 28th‑floor lab, his body is already succumbing to the virus. The antidote is completed, but the scientist‑team is swiftly overrun as Bryan’s mutating form drags corpses into a macabre amalgam. In a desperate moment, a surviving technician attempts a final injection, only for Bryan to knock the syringe from his grasp, sending it plummeting into darkness. Helicopters circle, hope evaporates, and the screen cuts to black.

“When the idea hit me, I knew it was the perfect finish,” Cregger told Reuters. “It feels right to stop searching for a brighter twist.”

The ending refuses the classic boss‑battle climax, opting instead for stark futility that mirrors the franchise’s darkest themes. Yet Cregger hints at future possibilities, suggesting the story may yet evolve beyond this grim finale. Bloomberg notes the film’s bold narrative gamble could redefine audience expectations for video‑game adaptations.
