Human toll beyond the flames

PM2.5 from wildfire smoke is linked to dementia, kidney disease and lung cancer. Cumulative exposure from 2006‑2020 accounted for an average 24,100 deaths per year, with neurological disorders showing the steepest rise. Pregnant women face a 3.4% higher risk of preterm birth after just one week of heavy smoke. Children’s test scores dip during smoky school years, and adult cognition falters on high‑smoke days.

Policy paths forward

Controlled burns and fuel‑management programs can slash emissions, turning potential infernos into manageable blazes. Burke argues that strategic thinning is a public‑health investment capable of reversing the upward mortality trend. The message is clear: without decisive climate action, wildfire smoke will continue to poison the nation’s air and health.
