A new peer‑reviewed analysis links the American West water crisis directly to the emissions of just 122 oil and cement giants, which together account for roughly ↓ 50% of the region’s climate‑driven water loss.

American West water crisis: 122 firms bear half the burden

Published in Communications Earth & Environment, the study examined data from 2014‑2024 and found snowpack and streamflows shrinking as temperatures climb.

Quantifying the hidden water deficit

Over the decade, the deficit equals the full capacity of Lake Mead, the nation’s largest reservoir, amounting to ↓ 9 trillion gallons of water.

“The changes in water‑cycle dynamics materialize across communities and ecosystems and are compounded by escalating climate impacts like drought, poor air quality, and land subsidence,” the Union of Concerned Scientists warned.

Indigenous peoples, whose cultures hinge on healthy rivers, face eroding salmon runs and threatened food sovereignty.

The findings were reported by Reuters and analysed in Bloomberg. The recent pandemic highlighted systemic water vulnerabilities across the West.
