Why Brexit Still Haunts British Politics and Sparks a Fresh EU Re‑Entry Debate

Brexit’s lingering impact on UK politics

Ten years after a 52% to 48% referendum split, the decision to leave the EU is resurfacing inside Labour’s corridors. Wes Streeting, former health secretary, labelled Brexit a “catastrophic mistake” and hinted that Britain’s future may lie back inside Europe, sparking fury among hard‑Brexit loyalists.

The UK formally exited the single market in January 2020 and signed the Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA) a year later. While the Conservative narrative promised a flood of deregulation, most EU statutes remain embedded in British law, and regulatory freedom has been exercised only in niche sectors such as finance.

Current state of UK‑EU talks

At the May 2025 summit, London and Brussels set a modest agenda: agricultural alignment, linking emissions‑trading schemes, possible participation in the EU internal electricity market, and a youth‑mobility scheme. Progress has been uneven. France secured a ↑ 12‑year fisheries extension, but negotiations on the Security Action for Europe (SAFE) collapsed after the EU attached a €150 billion price tag, prompting a British walk‑out.

Technical talks on youth mobility stall over a proposed UK cap and the EU demand that EU students pay “home” tuition of £9,500 instead of the £60,000 international rate.

“We need a relationship that reflects reality, not nostalgia,” a senior EU official told Reuters.

Labour’s recent local‑election setbacks have turned EU policy into a leadership litmus test. Streeting’s vague promise of a “special relationship” and a possible re‑entry bid has ignited speculation, but he offered no concrete roadmap.

What re‑joining would entail

Three pathways sit on the table: a customs union, single‑market access, or full EU membership. A customs union would lock the UK into EU tariffs, stripping it of independent trade deals. Single‑market entry would demand adoption of EU rules across the board and a return to free movement, while also requiring a hefty contribution – estimates suggest a ↓ 5 billion-pound increase over pre‑Brexit payments.

Full membership would trigger the treaty‑mandated accession process, erasing legacy rebates and the euro opt‑out. The political cost could be severe, yet Brussels would likely welcome a former member’s return as a symbolic triumph.

Economic analyses from Bloomberg place Brexit’s drag on GDP at around ↓ 8%. Even an ambitious “reset” of the TCA is projected to lift growth by less than ↑ 1%, leaving many MPs eyeing deeper EU integration as a growth lever ahead of the 2029 election.

Ultimately, the direction will hinge on who commands Downing Street. A leader eager to court pro‑European voters may push for a bold EU pivot; a more cautious premier could settle for incremental trade fixes. Whatever the choice, the spectre of Brexit will continue to dominate British political calculations.
