AliExpress fine of ↓ €550 million (↓ $629 million) marks the biggest penalty under the EU’s Digital Services Act to date, signaling a new era of enforcement against counterfeit and unsafe goods.

The European Commission concluded the marketplace failed to deploy effective safeguards that would curb the flow of illegal items, ranging from pirated electronics to non‑compliant toys. Compliance gaps were evident despite repeated notices.

“The Commission cannot tolerate platforms that turn a blind eye to illegal commerce,” a spokesperson told Reuters.

Analysts estimate the fine could pressure other global e‑commerce players to overhaul their vetting processes, potentially reshaping market dynamics across the continent. Bloomberg notes that the penalty may trigger a wave of internal audits and heightened legal scrutiny.
