New data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, released via the American Time Use Survey, confirms that Americans spending less time socializing is no longer a headline but a measurable trend. Average daily face‑to‑face interaction has slipped from ↓ 45 minutes to ↓ 35 minutes over two decades.

Americans spending less time socializing: a 20‑year decline

The shift cuts across every cohort, but the drop is starkest among 15‑24‑year‑olds, whose daily social minutes fell from an hour to just 35.

Generational gaps widen

Psychologists point to ubiquitous smartphones, with teens logging 4.8 hours on TikTok, Instagram and Snapchat daily (Reuters). Remote work, expanded home entertainment and the rise of delivery apps have turned homes into self‑contained worlds. A recent study from CU Boulder flagged the closure of libraries, coffee shops and museums, further eroding public gathering spots. Even churches are shuttering at unprecedented rates (Bloomberg).

“We are witnessing an anti‑social century,” notes a sociologist cited in the Atlantic.

The long‑term health and civic implications are still unfolding, but the data suggests a profound re‑calibration of how Americans allocate their waking hours.
