WHO Director‑General Tedros Ghebreyesus addressed anxious residents of Tenerife on Saturday, assuring them that the docking of the virus‑hit cruise ship MV Hondius will not trigger a new pandemic wave.

Virus‑hit cruise ship docking raises local concerns

“This is not another Covid,” Tedros told a crowded town hall, his tone measured yet firm.

“Our surveillance systems are active, and the ship will undergo thorough decontamination before any passenger disembarks,” he added.

Local health officials, coordinated with the WHO, report that the vessel’s crew tested negative for the novel strain, a ↑ 0% change from initial screenings.

Authorities plan to enforce a 48‑hour monitoring period for any crew members showing symptoms. The island’s tourism board, wary of economic fallout, hopes the reassurance will stave off cancellations.
