The White House ballroom project, championed by President Donald Trump, has seen its price tag balloon from roughly ↓ $200 million to just under $400 million, according to a Truth Social post.

White House ballroom cost controversy

Trump insists the escalation reflects a redesign that doubled the space and upgraded materials, promising a magnificent, safe, and secure venue for state functions and future inaugurations.

“The only reason the cost has changed is because, after deep rooted studies, it is approximately twice the size, and a far higher quality, than the original proposal,” the president wrote.

Republican senators attached a ↑ $1 billion security‑upgrade line item to an immigration enforcement bill, citing enhancements to the East Wing perimeter and the ballroom’s underground defenses. Reuters reported the measure does not name the ballroom explicitly.

Democrats slammed the plan as a vanity endeavor. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries called it “a vanity project that resulted from the unauthorized destruction of the East Wing.” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer added, “Republicans are on a different planet than American families.”

A preservation group sued in December, arguing the demolition violated historic preservation law. A March ruling halted work pending congressional approval, though the administration claims “necessary” security construction may proceed.

Trump highlighted a secretive military complex beneath the ballroom, describing bullet‑proof glass, bio‑defense systems, and a new underground hospital. “We have bomb shelters, secure telecommunications, and everything is bulletproof,” he told reporters.

White House director of management Joshua Fisher warned that many details remain top‑secret, a claim echoed by officials who refuse further comment. After the April shooting at the White House Correspondents’ dinner, Republicans renewed calls for the nuclear-level security upgrades, urging Congress to allocate the $400 million the GOP‑led bill proposes.
