US-Iran negotiations: a strategic illusion

General Michel Yakovlev, professor at Sciences‑Po and former NATO SHAPE vice‑chief, told Eve Irvine that the current lull is not a diplomatic breakthrough but a forced pause driven by logistics, politics and industry.

Sustainability of war, he warned, now eclipses battlefield victories. Missile inventories, domestic legitimacy and alliance guarantees are the new decisive factors.

“The United States can keep the pressure on Iran alone, but each day erodes its ability to deter elsewhere,” Yakovlev said.

He warned that continued unilateral action could shave ↓ 15% off America’s global deterrence credibility while Iran’s own stockpiles have already contracted by ↓ 10%.

The analysis echoes concerns raised by Reuters about the broader impact on NATO cohesion and Middle‑East stability.

Even as the pandemic reshaped supply chains, the same constraints now tighten the war‑making calculus.
