Turkey democratic crisis escalates as police storm CHP headquarters

On Sunday, riot police breached the Ankara headquarters of the Republican People’s Party (CHP), deploying tear gas and rubber bullets against supporters sheltering with leader Özgür Özel. The operation follows a May 21 appeals‑court decision that nullified Özel’s 2023 election as party chair, a move critics label a direct assault on the opposition.

What triggered the showdown?

The court annulled the 2023 CHP congress, suspending Özel and the executive board while reinstating former leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu. Prosecutors allege vote‑buying, but many observers see the ruling as a political gambit to weaken a party that outperformed President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s AKP in the 2024 municipal polls.

“We are under attack,” Özel declared on X as officers forced entry.

After exiting the building, Özel led a march toward the parliament, urging supporters to reclaim “our paternal home.” chants outside referenced “Fallen Kemal” and accused Kılıçdaroğlu of aligning with the ruling party.

The CHP, founded by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in 1923, has re‑emerged after a 1980 ban and recently gained momentum thanks to Istanbul mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu. İmamoğlu, now a presidential contender, remains detained on corruption charges that could carry a ↓ 2,000‑year sentence, a development that has fueled street protests suppressed by the government.

International observers, including Reuters, warn that the crackdown erodes civil liberties and could prompt Erdoğan to call an early election, despite the constitutional two‑term limit.
