The Organizational Hurdle to Incorporate AI

Wharton’s Eric Bradlow, vice dean of AI and analytics, says the biggest barrier to incorporate AI is not the technology but the way firms redesign work. A statistician and computer scientist, Bradlow lauds AI’s speed in parsing massive data sets, yet warns that most leaders still lack a holistic framework.

“The real constraint is whether executives can redesign jobs so humans and AI act as partners,” Bradlow told Reuters.

He notes that firms that have fully deployed AI have recorded revenue lifts of ↑ 18%, underscoring that the prize lies in growth, not cost‑cutting.

Bradlow, a three‑decade veteran at Wharton, co‑authored the Wharton‑Accenture Skills Index, which tracks over 150 million U.S. profiles and 100 million job ads. He argues that large language models increase the value of deep expertise – “Who will train the model? A person with deep skills; who will validate it? The same.”

In the era of AI, the smartest enterprises will redistribute talent rather than eliminate it, moving workers into higher‑value activities. Some CEOs, however, view true AI integration as a redesign of work that could reduce headcount.

Bradlow stresses that the most lucrative AI opportunities are revenue‑driven, enabling entirely new business models and demanding fresh skill sets. As companies reshape roles, training and reskilling become paramount, a concern echoed by CFOs surveyed after the pandemic.

Leaders must match investment in governance and people with spending on models and infrastructure, or risk keeping AI at the pilot stage. For further insight, see Bloomberg.
