Trump Meloni tensions ignite on the eve of NATO’s Turkish summit

U.S. President Donald Trump posted a provocative image of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Truth Social, captioned “restraining order needed,” reigniting the simmering Trump Meloni tensions that have dogged transatlantic ties.

In the picture, Meloni looks up at Trump, a scene captured in Sharm el‑Sheikh last October. Within the first ↓ 12% of the post’s reach, Italian pollsters reported a ↓ 5% dip in Meloni’s approval, echoing public fatigue.

Official silence masks deeper discord

Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani brushed off the incident, telling a national broadcaster that “transatlantic relations go beyond individual statements.” Interior Minister Matteo Salvini declined comment, while Defence Minister Guido Crosetto said he was focused on “vital ally” ties.

“People come and go, but relationships remain,” Crosetto said.

Trump’s earlier remarks on a G7 broadcast accused Meloni of “begging” for a photo and of obstructing U.S. use of Italian airfields, a claim that Reuters could not verify.

Meloni responded in June with a video on X, calling Trump’s accusations “fabricated” and warning that “Italy does not beg.” The exchange mirrors prior spats with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu.

Both leaders are slated to appear in Ankara on July 7‑8 for the NATO summit, where the Trump Meloni tensions could influence discussions on collective security, especially as the alliance grapples with the fallout of the pandemic and the looming Iran‑Israel confrontation.

Analysts note that the rift may force Washington to reassess its European posture, a development tracked closely by AP News.
