Shadow fleet escorts are forcing Russian naval units into costly protection duties, a senior NATO commander told reporters on Monday. The shadow fleet, composed of sanctioned vessels that skirt international bans, has seen ↓ 12 of its ships boarded by allied forces in the past twelve months.

Naval analysts say the extra load is eroding operational readiness, already hampered by maintenance backlogs and parts shortages. Each escort mission adds hours of fuel consumption and crew fatigue, compounding what NATO describes as “serious” logistical woes.

“The strain on our adversary’s surface fleet is mounting, and the shadow fleet’s role is a key factor,” the official said, speaking to Reuters.

Allied navies have intensified inspections, boarding a dozen suspect vessels since early 2023, according to a report from AP News. The heightened scrutiny aims to choke off illicit supply chains that sustain Russia’s maritime campaigns.
