Russian men jailed in Angola

An Angolan tribunal handed down harsh sentences to two Russian citizens accused of plotting a coup and fomenting deadly protests over fuel price hikes. Lev Lakshtanov was sentenced to ↓ 8 years, while Igor Ratchin received ↓ 11 years behind bars.

Charges and courtroom drama

The prosecution, citing Reuters, argued the pair coordinated with unnamed operatives to destabilize the government. Defense lawyers insisted the men were in Luanda for cultural exchanges and legitimate business dealings.

“The evidence points to a coordinated effort to undermine state security,” the prosecutor declared.

Both defendants denied the allegations, claiming their activities were purely commercial. The verdict arrives amid growing concerns about foreign interference in African politics, a theme highlighted by AP News in recent weeks.

International observers will monitor appeals, as the case may set a precedent for how Angola treats alleged espionage.
