Qantas engine fire aftermath

A Qantas engine fire erupted from the left engine of flight QF123 just moments after the aircraft lifted off from Queenstown, New Zealand. Passengers reported bright flames and a sudden jolt as the crew declared an emergency. Captain Michael Harris immediately initiated a return, and the plane descended to ↓ 5,000 ft before landing safely at Christchurch Airport.

Airline response

The airline activated its crisis protocol, coordinating with local authorities and Reuters for real‑time updates. All passengers were evacuated without injury, and a thorough inspection is underway.

“The safety of our customers is non‑negotiable,” said Qantas spokesperson Jenna Lee.

Investigators will examine whether residual effects from the recent pandemic disruptions to maintenance schedules played a role.
