Rosewood Hotels parental leave policy: 16 weeks of paid time

Amid a regional fertility plunge – Hong Kong’s rate now sits at ↓ 0.8 children per woman – the luxury chain announced a global 16‑week paid parental leave for every employee, regardless of gender or seniority.

The move arrives as Reuters reports that South Korea, Japan and Mainland China are all confronting sub‑replacement births, while Thailand’s aging curve threatens to outpace its economic growth.

“By rolling this policy out, it’s going to have an impact on our culture and our talent, and it’s going to drive business resilience in the long‑term,” says Keno Lung, Rosewood’s global SVP for talent and culture, speaking to Bloomberg.

Why the policy matters for the future of work

Hospitality firms are in a fierce war for skilled staff after the post‑pandemic travel surge. Rosewood, now present in ↑ 26 markets, hopes the gender‑neutral leave will erase the stigma that often keeps men from taking time off.

“People aren’t looking at brand prestige any more; they ask whether the company’s values align with their own,” Lung adds.

Implementation was not straightforward. Different jurisdictions impose varied statutory minima, payment formulas and legal definitions of parenthood. Rosewood chose to give employees the option, not the mandate, and will monitor return‑to‑work rates, engagement scores and career trajectories.

Support structures include an employee resource group for parents and caregivers, aimed at preventing the perception that caregiving is a career disruptor.
