Roman Space Telescope Set for Aug. 30 Launch to Hunt Early-Universe Black Hole Tidal Disruption Events

NASA is preparing to lift off the Roman Space Telescope on ↑2026‑08‑30, a mission poised to expose black holes tearing apart stars during the universe’s “cosmic noon” (≈11‑12 billion years ago).

When a star wanders too close to a supermassive black hole, gravitational forces stretch it into a luminous stream of plasma – a phenomenon astronomers call a tidal disruption event (TDE). These flashes can outshine an entire galaxy, offering a rare window onto otherwise invisible black holes.

Current theory holds that TDEs should be scarce in the early cosmos because the first black holes were thought to be under 100,000 solar masses, too light to shred stars. A new study published in The Astrophysical Journal challenges that view, suggesting that during cosmic noon TDEs may have been ↑10 000 times more frequent than previously estimated.

“Roman’s high‑latitude time‑domain survey will revisit a sky area the size of 90 full moons, enabling us to catch dozens of TDEs per year at unprecedented distances,” said Mitchell Karmen, Johns Hopkins University.

The survey will repeatedly scan the same region, building a catalog of transient events that can be cross‑checked with data from the Reuters and NASA archives. Researchers anticipate detecting hundreds of TDEs from the era when galaxies were most active, a sample size large enough to differentiate between “light‑seed” and “heavy‑seed” black‑hole formation models.

By counting TDEs as a function of redshift, the Roman Space Telescope will provide the statistical leverage needed to answer why supermassive black holes reached billions of solar masses within the first billion years after the Big Bang.
