In a surprise turn on Thursday, House Republican leaders shelved the scheduled vote on the Trump Iran war powers resolution after internal polling showed insufficient support.

Why the Trump Iran war powers measure matters

The bill would have marked the first congressional rebuke of President Trump’s Iran campaign, a move that previous Democratic‑led attempts failed to achieve.

Democrat Rep. Jared Golden (D‑ME), the lone opposition voice on earlier Iran war powers votes, signaled a switch to yes, while four Republicans – Brian Fitzpatrick (R‑PA), Thomas Massie (R‑KY), Warren Davidson (R‑OH) and Tom Barrett (R‑MI) – had already backed the text.

“We’ve gone from losing by one to tying last week to this chicken‑s*** retreat,” Rep. Jared Huffman (D‑CA) told Reuters.

The vote was largely symbolic; even if passed, President Trump could veto it.

GOP leaders intend to revive the measure after the Memorial Day recess, though Speaker Mike Johnson (R‑LA) can tolerate only a few defections when the chamber is at full strength.

Earlier, a ↓ 212↓ 212 tie on a similar resolution underscored the fragile GOP coalition.

President Trump publicly warned Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, saying, “He likes voting against Trump. You know what happens with that? It doesn’t work out well,” but Fitzpatrick affirmed his intent to support the war powers bill, noting, “We don’t report to any party or any person here in D.C.”

As the conflict drags on without explicit congressional authorization, a growing faction of Republicans points to the expired 60‑day War Powers Act deadline as a legal turning point, a claim the White House rebuts by citing the ceasefire with Iran. For further context, see AP News.
