Governor Greg Abbott delivered a blunt warning to the AI sector, labeling the growing data center backlash as a self‑inflicted wound. In an interview with ABC’s Jonathan Karl, the Republican chief said developers “dug their own grave” after sidestepping local consent.

Abbott, who in November hailed Texas as the epicenter of AI development alongside a ↑ $40B Google‑backed campus rollout, has reversed course. He ordered regulators to make firms shoulder the full cost of power infrastructure and to phase out tax breaks.

Democratic governors in Pennsylvania and New York have already imposed limits, and the National Republican Senatorial Committee warned that voter anger could jeopardize key Senate races.

“Gaining the support of people in local communities is essential,” Abbott told Karl.

Recent Reuters polling shows ↓ 61% of Americans oppose a new data center in their neighborhood, up from 49% in March. Opposition spans the aisle: 69% of Democrats, 54% of Republicans and 53% of independents share the sentiment. Bloomberg notes the growing political heat.

The stakes extend beyond politics. Data centers demand massive electricity, water, and transmission capacity, yet they generate fewer permanent jobs than traditional industrial projects.
