Researchers at the Center for Nuclear Energy in Agriculture at the University of São Paulo (CENA-USP) have uncovered alarming levels of antibiotic residues in the Piracicaba River, a major waterway in Brazil’s interior. Published in Environmental Sciences Europe, the study detected multiple classes of antibiotics in the river’s ecosystem, raising concerns over bioaccumulation in aquatic life and potential public health risks. The team also found that Salvinia auriculata, a common aquatic plant in the region, can partially reduce the concentration of these pharmaceuticals in water and mitigate genetic damage in fish populations. This discovery offers a potential low-cost, nature-based solution to combat pharmaceutical pollution, though experts warn that widespread contamination remains a pressing environmental challenge. The findings underscore the urgent need for improved wastewater treatment and stricter regulation of antibiotic discharge into freshwater systems.
