An unprecedented climate‑model experiment released on July 7 by the Alliance to Feed the Earth in Disasters (ALLFED) shows that an AMOC collapse could slash global cereal output and trigger a wave of price inflation.

Implications of an AMOC collapse for world agriculture

The simulation imposed a 60% weakening of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation over five decades while the planet warmed 2 °C above pre‑industrial levels. A parallel run kept the circulation intact, allowing a direct comparison. Results echo earlier work: the Northern Hemisphere experiences a broad cooling, the inter‑tropical rain band migrates southward, and the changes persist beyond human planning horizons, according to co‑author Michael Hinge.

“Once the damage is inflicted, it stays there,” Hinge told Reuters.

Layering crop models for wheat, maize and rice onto the climate output revealed a ↓ 5.3% contraction in average global yields by year 50, with regional extremes far worse. Germany and Ukraine could lose up to 19% of cereal production, while Canada faces a 12% dip. A dry “brown splodge” emerges over India, Pakistan and much of China, and water‑stressed nations such as Iran, Sudan and Eritrea see precipitous rainfall deficits. The analysis warns that annual fluctuations may push global cereal losses above 10% in bad years, potentially inflating staple prices by as much as ↓ 40%. The United States is not immune, with projected wheat and corn reductions near 3%, a shock that would reverberate through meat and processed‑food markets. Hinge stresses that maladaptation—investing for hotter futures only to confront abrupt cooling—could amplify the agricultural shock. He adds that the modeling pipeline can ingest any AMON scenario to generate high‑resolution impact maps, a tool he hopes will spur pre‑emptive policy. Yet he concedes that “there are no easy answers”; an AMOC collapse would force nations to rethink trade, stockpiling and climate‑resilience strategies.
