NASA audit intensifies scrutiny of Boeing Starliner

The Office of the Inspector General released a scathing review on June 30, warning that Boeing Starliner may remain grounded for years while NASA wrestles with helium leaks, propulsion failures and parachute anomalies. Three chronic technical flaws have stalled the vehicle’s human‑rating certification since March 2026, and the agency cannot forecast when remedial testing will finish.

“Ambiguity in mishap classification cost NASA over ↓ 21 months of delay,” the OIG noted.

SpaceX continues to deliver crews, preparing ↑ 13 operational missions with Crew‑13 slated for September, while Boeing’s lone Crew Flight Test in June 2024 ended with a rescue aboard a SpaceX Dragon. The next Starliner flight is slated to be uncrewed, but no launch window has been set. NASA has agreed to the OIG’s ten recommendations, including holding payments to Boeing until certification is secured and tightening data‑rights on simulation testing. Reuters reports the agency faces workforce cuts that could further erode oversight. Bloomberg adds that budget pressures may delay corrective actions.
