International evacuation of cruise ship passengers gains momentum

Spanish nationals and crew members began disembarking from the quarantined vessel docked in the Canary Islands, marking the first phase of an international evacuation coordinated by local authorities and foreign consulates.

Officials enforce temperature checks, rapid antigen testing and mandatory masks; the protocol mirrors protocols used in past maritime incidents.

“The pathogen appears considerably less transmissible than the coronavirus that caused the pandemic,” said a health minister in a briefing.

According to Reuters, ↑ 1,200 passengers are slated to return home over the next 48 hours, while infection‑risk estimates have slipped to ↓ 2% since the ship’s isolation began.

Public anxiety persists, but experts argue the threat remains marginal compared with COVID‑19, urging calm and compliance.
