Gravity-1 rocket achieves third sea launch

On July 21, the Gravity-1 rocket lifted off from a maritime platform off Shanghai at 22:54 UTC, propelling nine undisclosed satellites into their intended orbits, according to Xinhua. The vehicle, standing ↑30 m tall, comprises three core stages and four solid‑fuel strap‑on boosters, making it the world’s most powerful solid‑propellant launcher.

It delivered a payload of ↑6,500 kg to low‑Earth orbit, a record for its class. Operated by Shandong‑based Orienspace, the rocket’s compact size contrasts with SpaceX’s Falcon 9, yet its sea‑based flexibility meets a niche demand.

“Sea launch of solid‑propellant rockets paves the way for future launch of liquid rockets at sea,” said chief designer Xu Guoguang.

Gravity-2 rocket slated for late‑year sea debut

Following the successful trio of maritime missions—January 2024, October 2025, and now July 2026—Orienspace plans to field Gravity‑2, a larger vehicle with a liquid‑core stage and solid boosters, likely from the same oceanic pad before year‑end.

Analysts observe that floating launch sites could diminish reliance on fixed ranges and accelerate constellation roll‑outs, a trend highlighted in a recent Reuters briefing on sea‑based launch strategies.
